Hello everyone and welcome to #traveltuesday. Today we’re starting a weekly series which will feature ideas of what to pack for each of the destinations that the grand prize winner will be visiting. Thanks for all the suggestions that you sent to us on Twitter and Facebook. Here we go!
First off, here are the basics. The Moroccan unit of currency is the Moroccan Dirham, which is divided into 100 Centimes. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to exchange or obtain Moroccan Dirhams outside of Morocco, but banks and official bureaux de change are widely spread in major towns. Major credit cards are accepted in the larger restaurants, shops and hotels.
As far as exploring the city goes, CristoCowan makes an excellent point: ‘Don't wear flip-flops near the Djemaa el Fna, Marrakesh. A lot of horse carriages = a lot of unpleasant things to step in.’ Too right, Cristo. Flip flops are seldom a good choice when walking around in places where poo abounds. Thanks!
The weather in Marrakech is sunny almost all year round, with the warmest months being July, August and September. You’ll be there in January, so things will be a little cooler and there is a chance that you’ll see some heavy downpours - another good reason to leave the flip-flops at home. Expect temperatures rising to the high teens and dipping to around 4 degrees C at night. My advice? Take a waterproof jacket that is reasonably warm. One of our other followers says: ‘Nightime storytelling in the town squares is magical even if you don't understand a word.’
Bridget Kramer got hold of us on Facebook and offered this little gem: ‘Don't tell people you're on a Mor-rock-n-roll tour... You will be PUNished for your puns.’ Ahem… yes, very important to leave the puns at home.
So there you have it, top tips for the first leg of the prize! Keep those votes coming in and check back here for a Prize Preview tomorrow.
