In case you missed it last week, this column runs through the destinations included in our GROM grand prize, letting you know what practical information you may need in each country on your 6-month adventure. As you can probably tell from the picture above, this week we’re taking a look at Egypt.
The official currency in Egypt is the Egyptian Pound (E£; called the guinay in Arabic) which is made up of 100 piastres. There’s a huge shortage of small change in Egypt, so try to hoard it for cab fares, tips, and in situations where you are given incorrect change – which will probably happen at some point. Some things are charged in US dollars, so remember to take some with you during the trip. As in most countries, credit cards are accepted widely in foreign-friendly restaurants, hotels and shops. You will probably be charged a percentage of the sale (between 3% and 10%) to use them though.
Let’s take a look at the weather: You’ll be in Egypt in January, so you’ll be missing out on the unbearable heat of late summer and enjoying the temperate winter conditions instead. Pack the sunscreen, but be prepared for rain in some areas and for chilly evening conditions. Pack a jumper too!
